EAT & DRINK IT: Cococuts

The coconut is one of the greatest gifts of this planet! The coconut has a natural water filter - it takes almost 9 months to filter each liter of water. The water travels through many fibers being purified to where it is stored away STERILE inside the nut. Coconut water is pure and one of the highest sources of electrolytes known to man. It is identical to human blood plasma (plasma makes up 55% of human blood), which makes it the universal donor. Therefore eating and drinking coconuts is really good for you. I have been purchasing young Thai Coconuts (water is slightly sweeter and the meat is softer) at a local health food store, and also from Whole Foods for about $3.00 each.

If you do not have easy access or perhaps want to take on a trip- there are two boxed coconut water companies, Zico (tastes more similar to Thai coconuts I like) and Vita Coco, I have tried that are available for purchase online. Of course, drinking right from the source is more optimal, as once exposed to air, the liquid rapidly loses most of its organoleptic and nutritional characteristics, and begins to ferment.

Sometimes opening a young coconut is not so easy- recently I purchased a Henckels cleaver (on amazon.com) and also a coconut opening tool (still waiting for it) from youngcoconuts.com to help. Click here and here for more info on coconuts. Click Here to go to rawglow's link with pictures on how to open, and below is a video for tips on opening the young coconut.

ESPIED: Emotive Clothing

An interesting idea... A research team at Philips has developed clothes that look good and let others know how you feel. The Bubelle Blush Dress is designed with equipped with sensors that respond to changes in the wearer's emotions and project them onto the outer layer of the textile. The Frisson Body Suit incorporates hundreds of minature LEDs that are attached to sensitive electronic hairs covering the surface of the body. They light up when they are brused or blown on. According to the designers, the Frisson LEDs light up in the same way that the skin would tingle, blush or shiver when blown on or stimulated. The researchers sought to challenge the idea that a digital world is automatically a better world. Their work exploits technologies that are more sensitive than "intelligent". Am sure not all of us are comfortable wearing our emotions on our sleeves, but perhaps that might make things a bit easier? Less guessing? To see the full slide show and tidbits go to Time.com.

Randy Pausch also gave this lecture on Oprah back on 10/22/07, which was about "dying"....if you knew your were dying how would you spend your time? What would you say and how would you live? It also featured Kris Karr, author of "Crazy Sexy Cancer"- click HERE to be taken to her blog. One of Oprah's best episodes.

C'est Chic: Commuun

Established in 2005 by Kaito Hori and Iku Furudate, Commuun has held exhibitions during the Paris Women's Ready to Wear Fashion Week ever since and from its debut, enjoyed strong critical acclaim. The core idea of all collections is drawn from the structural aspect of nature, with its balance and tensions. Commuun’s work aims at reconstructing these features through simple but strong shapes and fine detailing. This fundamental approach is also reflected in the exclusive use of natural and organic fabrics for the collection. Before each collection, detailed research is undertaken in order to determine the most adequate fabrics to work with. Once carefully chosen, the materials are further refined through the use of the traditional French pattern cutting technique to create clothes of long-lasting quality, balance and functionality. Commuun's garments are best-known for their simple and well-tailored patterns reinforced by futuristic details. In the mix were cocoon dresses in of-the-moment sheers and feather-light jersey frocks. Two years ago Negroponte founded the non-profit organization, "One Laptop Per Child", and his dream is now becoming a reality... Starting November 12, "One Laptop Per Child" will be offering a Give 1 Get 1 Program for a brief window of time in North America. For $399, you will be purchasing two XO laptops—one that will be sent to empower a child to learn in a developing nation, and one that will be sent to your child at home.
